| | I'm currently sitting in a king-sized bed at a Holiday Inn, propped up on more pillows than anyone could ever need, and watching TV AND Facebooking. Why am I not home, you ask? I will tell you: hail, snow, 30 mph winds, frozen gas pumps, and a motherly lady working the check-in desk.
As soon as I got to Dayton, OH, it started raining (of course). I can't remember the last time I drove through Ohio and it wasn't raining. No offense, Ohioans, but driving through Ohio sucks. Plus, it had snowed earlier so the rain was mixing with it and creating this nasty slush. But then I got to Indiana...and it started hailing. Not huge hailstones, but not very soft. Everyone on the road slowed down a little bit, but it wasn't too slippery...yet. After maybe twenty minutes, it started snowing hard. It's kind of hard as an Iowan to admit that there is snow I can't drive through, but I definitely did not want the next 5 hours to take 10 instead. Soooo...I stopped and got a room in a Holiday Inn (hoping it'd be cheaper? false.) around 8 pm, hoping I could sleep until 3, and then drive the rest of the way home and make it in time for church. (aside: on the 25 most stylish accessories on the style. channel, they definitely just listed a baby)
I woke up at 3, showered, made coffee, and headed down to check out. I should have guessed I wouldn't have made it very far when I got stuck backing out of the snow drifted over my car. The lady at the desk seemed concerned, but I told her I would drive slowly. The wind sort of knocked me over when I walked out the door, but I managed to de-ice my windows and get out of the parking lot. Then I realized that I needed gas, but the gas pumps across the street were frozen (??) (2nd aside: Mucinex commercials are gross) I got about 3 miles down the highway, realized I couldn't see due to the winds, and turned around and got my hotel room back (the lady had said that if I decided it was too bad, I could come back - isn't that sweet?)
So now I'm well-rested and caffeinated with nowhere to go. At least I'll get to cash in on the continental breakfast.
